Marshall was the entry point for the Iron Horse era in Texas, the end of the line prior to the Civil War, and the force which transformed the state in the years immediately afterward. Next to historic Ginocchio Hotel.
The railroad which entered Texas at Marshall led to the emergence of Dallas as a new type of metropolis: a huge city located on the prairie away from navigable waterways. As the railroad became the primary transportation system in the state in the years after the Civil War, the state's economy was transformed. Cities like Fort Worth emerged, and rail transportation put an end to the golfrn era of the cowboy by eliminating the need for cattle drives taking West Texas herds to market via railheads in Kansas.
